This is a story about the marijuana boom in the rural community of Hayfork, Ca.
A small, geographically isolated place, Hayfork has experienced a dramatic shift in landscape and population in the wake of the booming marijuana industry. A resulting competition for resources, concern for environmental degradation, and tensions surrounding the ethical and illegal nature of the drug industry have contributed to disunity and division in the town. Ongoing changes in culture, markets, and law make the future of the industry, and its place in the community, uncertain. Utilizing documentary photography and a series of interviews of residents, marijuana growers, law enforcement officers and government officials, this project tells a story of marijuana in Hayfork –the complex and evolving role it plays, and the lessons it offers for the future.
